It involves the use of a turning engine to cut intricate, repetitive patterns onto a metal surface. At the peak of its popularity, engine turning was used to decorate compact mirrors, boxes, hairbrushes and watch cases and dials. It is very rare today because the traditional hand-crafting technique is extremely difficult, requiring highly specialized and aging machines, and demands years of practice to master.
